Hadrian’s Wall is one of Britain’s architectural and historical wonders. The most photogenic stretches of what now remains are in Northumberland, from Chesters Roman Fort near Hexham to Gilsland on the Cumbrian border. We’ll spend the day exploring Hadrian’s Wall with our cameras visiting Steel Rigg and Peel Crag, as well as nearby Milecastle 39. From there we’ll drive westwards to spend some time at Cawfields Quarry, before finishing at Walltown Crags.
The workshop takes place in late summer, and is timed to end at sunset so we can take advantage of the warm evening light.
Useful information
This workshop is suitable for photographers of all levels of experience and ability, from absolute beginners to those with more experience. The group size is limited to six to allow Jason and David to devote ample time throughout the day to every participant.
Bring with you the camera equipment (camera, lenses and filters) you already own and would normally take out for the day. A tripod will be useful, but don’t worry if you don’t have one: it's not essential and we may be able to lend you one for the workshop.
We will be walking over uneven and ground throughout the day. Hadrian’s Wall Country can be mild in September, but the evenings are often chilly. Be sure to bring warm and windproof clothing, as well as waterproofs just in case. You will also need sturdy and comfortable waterproof walking boots.
Although we won’t be walking too far from our cars we will occasionally climb steep slopes so a reasonable degree of fitness and mobility is recommended.
Recently, I attended a Hadrian's Wall Photography Workshop with Jason Friend Photography Ltd. and the afternoon was hosted by Jason's colleague, David Taylor.
I summary, it was a brilliant event; Great company, great locations and some great images! David's knowledge of the area was second to none and he was very helpful indeed in providing help, not only with taking me to wonderful locations, but also providing excellent guidance in creating interesting compositions, suggesting some 'different' camera/lens set-ups and making best use of the light in the locations visited.
I can heartily recommend this company and will certainly be booking future events.
